The Less I Know, The Better

Carter was outside his classroom smocking a cigarette. Funny, because when we were together, he wasn't smocking anymore. Maybe he was just lying to me and was using a good mouth washing. I was staring at him, but he couldn't see me.

He is hooking up with a girl named Jess, said my best friend. I know she told me for my own good. She keeps telling me, what are you waiting for? He will never change. I know. I can’t wait forever. Every time I see his face, I just want to squeeze it with my hands. Run my fingers through his beard. Curse him and know for sure he would be back tomorrow.

I don't want to know anything about him, I told my friend. Let me dream of him. Let me pretend I can wait for him.

Based on one of the prompts in the book “642 Things To Write About” by The San Francisco Writers’ Grotto.
